It’s time to end unjust firings in New York City.
Right now, under At-Will employment, employers in New York City can fire non-union workers with no warning, for invalid reasons, or sometimes for no reason at all.
The Secure Jobs Act is the protection workers need.
The Secure Jobs Act is proposed New York City legislation that will protect workers against unjust and arbitrary firings by requiring that employers give employees advance notice and show that they have a good reason before they discharge a worker.

In January 2023 our coalition was formed and launched the Secure Jobs Campaign.
Intro 909-2024: The Secure Jobs Act
The Secure Jobs Act (Intro 909) was originally introduced in the New York City Council in December 2022, and was re-introduced in May 2024.
“It is disgraceful that working New Yorkers are forced to live under the constant threat of being fired for any reason, or no reason at all, with no warning, no explanation, and no recourse. Arbitrary firings mean taking it all away, at a moment’s notice: the ability to make rent, car payments, to afford medicine, food, childcare, and more. Workers keep our city afloat, and they deserve better.
The fight for the Secure Jobs Act is a fight for peace of mind, for freedom from fear, for New York City that works for all of us.”
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
